Pitch Advice

Some of you know that I have a pitch scheduled in March with a Harlequin editor and an agent. I've been trying to come up with something constructive that doesn't make me sound like a complete idiot. A friend mentioned on eHQ that she was watching a DVD she ordered by Michael Hauge. I had no idea who he was. I found an incredible interview though where he talks about pitching. His book is How to Sell Your Story in 60 Seconds.

Interview at Writer Unboxed. It's a very interesting three part series.

Internal Conflict

One of the things I've thought about when I started revising/rewriting my ms...is what the editor said in her suggestions. I'm trying to focus on her comments. One of the things she commented on was the lack of internal conflict for my heroine. I could semi-understand (Is that even a word?) what she's talking about...I think. I mean, I think my internal conflict is great but I guess I didn't get it down the way it was in my head. Big difference between thinking it...and getting it conveyed on paper.

I thought about what internal conflict was and how to get it down so that the reader can see what's in my head. (Which could really scare someone;) It seems to be...putting the reader into the storyline. Making them feel what your heroine/character is dealing with - internally. An emotional POV because her conflict is what's driving her emotionally.

My character has a great motivation...which is also causing her conflict. How many times have we've been driving down the road...or doing dishes...taking a shower, and thought about our problems? My heroine's internal conflict is something we all deal with...doubt. In her situation it should be easy ~ because of what's causing the conflict. A teenager. If you're a parent, doubt goes hand-in-hand with the daily decisions we have in dealing with the drama a teen can create.

What drives your character's emotions...their motivation? Why? Question their reasons and reactions to conflict. And ask why.

Oklahoma Outlaws

What image does that conjure in your thoughts? That is the name of my local RWA chapter that I joined officially as of Saturday. I think I'll fit in well ;) I was really embarrassed Saturday because the room was FULL of talented, creative...published authors....and I had to introduce myself. I thought my face was going to catch on fire and explode. I can hold my own in a chat channel...but girls...I hate being put on the spot. I wonder what'll happen when I get published and have to sit at a table full of books and pray someone actually wants me to sign one. *sigh*

Anyhoo...our March meeting is going to be a mini-conference. We'll be able to pitch our mss to Miriam Kriss, an agent with the Irene Goodman Literary Agency and Margo Lipschultz with HQN. How cool is that.

Sooo...I'll be a little busy until then...maybe hit and miss for awhile. But, I'm here. Lurking and missing you guys.

Sharing

I'm going to share the love...

A good friend sent me an e-mail I just had to share with my writer buddies. Who else could understand our humor? LOL! Hope everyone is having a productive week.

MY LIVING WILL

Last night my sister and I were sitting in the den, talking, and I said to her, "I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle to keep me alive. That would be no quality of life at all, If that ever happens, just pull the plug."

So she got up, unplugged my computer, then threw out my wine. She' s such a bitch.

Cheat Sheet

My, what a bright and shiny new year it is. I have a good feeling about the direction I'm heading and I've met some really incredible people. 2007 overall was a great year for pursuing dreams.

Let's start the year out write/right and get this party started. Let's get some motivation cranked up on high. A favorite author of mine is also a fellow Oklahoman ~ Laura Marie Altom has a "cheat sheet" posted on her website that reminded me of where I am in my career. She gives some great advice! Enjoy!

"Cassie-gate"

O.M.G.

A long time historical author has been accused of the unthinkable. This should shake things up a bit. Even La Nora has eloquently spoken. I was checking e-mail tonight and a RWA Alert was posted. It was a second notice about RWA's standing toward a recent scandal hitting the press but it sounds as if the internet and blogosphere is where it all began.

SmartBitchesTrashyBooks.com

In a succession of blog posts, you can see the controversy bud and then explode. Supposedly, even CNN, MSNBC, USA Today, New York Times and the AP have responded. SBTB details how they have compared passages from multiple books, multiple publishers written by historical romance writer Cassie Edwards, to identical passages she supposedly lifted from various published works. They've even tracked the plagiarism dating back to 1983. Apparently a big part of the controversy lies with the fact that Signet, the publisher, originally denied any illegal wrong doing and Ms. Edwards herself claimed to have done nothing wrong. The passages she copied were available for "fair use". But I guess now that Signet has had time to see the fallout from this, they've decided to investigate. In my case, the internet worked better than satellite. I hadn't heard anything of the debate until tonight.

SBTB notes that Signet has changed their POV. Hmmm. Really. La Nora even commented on SBTB with calm and class. But even I remember as far back as elementary school, it's considered plagiarism if you copy words verbatim and not site the source. Whether it's from historical research and non-fiction or fiction.

How does this affect us? Well...if people boycott Signet...what about the sales of innocent authors swept up in the tidal wave of bad press? What about Janet Dailey and her admission to plagiarizing Nora Roberts works in 1997...is Ms. Dailey still writing?

Breathing!

Boy howdy! I've been a little busy...eHarlequin has been getting ready to roll-out the new boards and they had some of us doing a little tire-kicking to check for glitches in the system. So, the new hub went online and I sat patiently waiting...finally I had to go pick up kiddos and thought I'd missed it. I checked online and *voila* it was there...I sent a post to my favorite SuperRomance board and before long realized my signature line had changed. It said January Member of the Month! How cool is that! My picture is on the community hub front page. Ugh!!!

Which brings me to another reason I'm busier than normal ~ I joined a gym. I knew that I would make myself go if I was paying for it. I'm such a tightwad and really hate spending money on myself...this forces me to make it work. And yes, I've gone two days in a row. I signed up Tuesday...exercised and actually "wanted" to go back today. It's quiet when I go and only a handful of people were in there...no intimidating barbie dolls! I'm a little sore but not bad. Already down a pound but I think it's because I haven't had a Coke in a couple of days. But...I signed a year contract. Even when I lose weight, I'm going to keep it off!

Wow!

Man stabs another man with pork chop bone

Jan 2, 2008 03:32 PM CST

NBC NEWS REPORT

ARDMORE -- An Oklahoma man was arrested after police say he stabbed another man in the neck with a pork chop bone during a food fight.

Police in Ardmore, Oklahoma responded to call of a fight outside a local business New Year's day. When they arrived, they found the victim covered in blood with a puncture wound to his neck.

Police arrested the suspect, 38-year-old Tony Willis a few block from the crime scene. According to authorities, Willis had blood on his clothes and they found the bone used in the attack.

The victim was treated at a local hospital and released.

(I read this online with a local news agency...it lends a whole new meaning to slapping someone who picks food off your plate. I wonder if the victim had eaten his black-eyed peas for the New Year?)

New Baby!

As if I didn't have enough to do, I let myself get suckered into taking a puppy. A friend had gotten a Lab mix from the animal shelter and didn't know she was pregnant or full of heartworms. She started treatments and began to get fat and healthy looking. During the big ice storm we had, she popped out 15 puppies, 11 survivors. But one of the first pups they found outside was cold and stiff, they tried for a long time to revive her. My friend finally gave up and put her with the others until he could clean up the mom and remaining puppies. As he was taking the pups out that didn't make it, he heard a squeal and realized it was the first little girl they found outside. They named her Possum. And now she's a part of our family.

Welcome Miss Possum!!

Motivation

I'm trying a new approach on the revisions...actually it's almost a total rewrite of my ms. I'd love to say I'm hard at work and the word count is growing, but I've been gathering. I'm wanting to take a more organized path this time to see if maybe it'll make a difference. When I wrote this ms the first time, it was a NaNo.

Samantha Hunter is a Blaze author with Harlequin and she is currently working a thread at eHQ about motivation. When I first heard them discussing the workshop, I thought maybe it was about writing through adversity or outside influences during the holidays...nope. It plays in more with what I had been reading about ~ layering and character traits.

One of the things that she mentions is...WHY? There are so many things that can play into your character's motivation. History, personality, reactions and background issues ~ just to name a few.

The Motivation Clinic

I really liked something she mentioned - a motivational chain. Start questioning why and see where it takes you. I think it adds a three dimensional depth to a character. Several of the authors lately have had threads where their characters are being interviewed and chatting with readers. It made it seem more realistic, especially after having read the book. But the readers were digging into motivation and what drives the character.

How deep do you get into your characters...and how do you keep it consistent?

Rejection

I stumbled across an author's amazing story about the road to getting published. I didn't recognize the name until I got further down through her post. So Merry Christmas to all my buddies struggling right now. I hope this gives you as much encouragement as it did me. It'll happen.

A-Ha! Ohhh...that's what that means!

I love it when I have one of those moments when something just clicks. As a fairly new writer, muddling around toward my ultimate goal...to be a published author...I've had quite a few of those *aha* moments, or at least what I consider a few nano-seconds of clarity.

Several authors and friends have referred me to Debra Dixon's non-fiction book for writers ~ Goal, Motivation and Conflict. I keep putting off buying it because...well, I'm cheap and would rather spend the money on say...electricity or food. But as I was working on rewriting my synopsis this weekend, I decided to research GMC to see what articles I could find. Most of what I found referred back to Debra Dixon's book. So I think I've found a good solution...my mother asked me just this morning what I wanted for Christmas. I usually have no clue as to what I want or need. But this evening I had another *aha* thought ... wow ~ 2 in one day ...and made her a list of writing manuals including GMC.

But what I wanted to share with you guys was an article I found by Susan Vaughan about conflict. She went a little further than what I had previously found online. She defines conflict, or something that I found helpful...what conflict "is not".

Gas Pains...

One of the blogs I frequent has a thought provoking post today...check it out.

Plot Monkeys

On another subject...I've often read on author sites, where published authors talk about people who've actually asked them if they'd write a story with someone else's story idea. And share the money. I laughed because I wondered if it was really that common. Until recently. I had a family member...known for his get rich quick schemes which usually involve someone else doing the work while "family member" gets the credit and profit, who told me that I should send my current ms to him. He could help crit the chapters...and I could share the royalties. He's been reading for years so he's somewhat of an expert. Ugh. And I'm not even published.

Christmas Meme

I think this is my first Christmas meme #1. I can't remember if I did one last year. Oh well...no matter cause I'll have fun doing it.

I was tagged by my buddy Jennifer Shirk. Enjoy.

1... Eggnog or hot chocolate? Eggnog definitely, in my Bailey's Irish Cream.

2... Does Santa wrap presents or just put them under the tree? Both. Mostly wrapped. Big ones like bikes... a ribbon maybe. We don't do many Santa gifts though.

3... Colored or white lights on tree/house? Red and white. Mostly white. We put up red rope lights along roof and gutter lines and white icycles along gutter. It looks almost like a Santa hat.

4... Do you hang mistletoe? I agree with Jennifer. NO. Too awkward.

5... When do you put your decorations up? Usually we put everything up the Friday after Thanksgiving. But this year we're just now putting them up this weekend.

6... What is your holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Green bean casserole and cream cheese Mexi-corn. And when hubby is home we do the fried turkey.

7... Favorite holiday memory as a child. The year my dad finally showed up. Christmas morning the doorbell rings and we open the front door. The entire glass storm door is filled with toys. As dad starts taking toys away to reveal himself, he is holding a Boxer puppy. As an adult and parent I look back and feel bad for my mom but as a child it was pretty damn exciting, we got a ton of toys and a puppy.

8... When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? Pretty early I guess because to tell the truth I don't remember.

9... Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? We get our Santa stockings over at my mom's.

10... How do you decorate your Christmas tree? Mostly white lights with a couple of red strings spaced out. Rustic country wood decorations, pine cones, crimson red bows, gold and crimson red balls and ornaments the boys get every year.

11... Snow! Love it or dread it? We love it but hate Okie drivers.

12... Can you ice skate? Nope. Not on my to-do list either. ;)

13... Do you remember your favorite gift? My sweetheart gave me a heart necklace our first year together.

14... What’s the most important thing about the holidays for you? I completely agree with Jennifer on this one as well...Celebrating the birth of Jesus--and quality time with my family.

15... What is your favorite holiday dessert? Christmas peppermint bark!!

16... What is your favorite holiday tradition? Getting the boys in bed on Christmas Eve and spending the evening with hubby. We finish wrapping gifts and curl up on the couch by the fireplace with the only lights coming from the tree.

17... What tops your tree? A crimson red and gold angel.

18... Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? Giving. We only buy a present or two for each other and splurge on the boys.

19... What is your favorite Christmas song? "Breath of Heaven (Mary's Song)" by Amy Grant.

20... Candy canes: We found SpongeBob candy canes. Who knew.

21... Favorite Christmas movie? Oooo, hard choice. I'm a sucker for the oldies...of course "It's a Wonderful Life". But a close favorite is the 1947 version of "Miracle on 34th Street".

22... What do you leave for Santa? Eggnog and cookies.

I'll be a spoiler and not tag anyone...everyone's so stressed. But please ~ take a break and play along if you have time. I'm watching you! ;)

A Different Kind of Christmas Poem

A friend sent me an email from a soldier in Iraq. Please say a prayer for our brave souls across the sea, far away from loved ones and standing tall to keep us safe.

Subject: A different Christmas poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts.
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light.
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."

"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me."

"My Gramps died at 'Pearl' on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers.
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am."

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile."
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.

"I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.

I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."

"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.

For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
It is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

PLEASE, Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S. service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us.

Why wait?

Some of my crit partners were recently talking about being unhappy with their weight, right here before the holidays when we all seem to gain. So we decided...why wait until the new year to start dieting? I'll let you know if I can stick with it this time...Hubby comes home in April and I'd love to surprise him.

I've always heard that a support system helps. It's all about the encouragement, support and...accountability. So why not? It's helped me with my writing. Of course I'd love to go to the extreme and lose a bunch really fast, but I want to keep it off this time. It needs to be a lifestyle change. I don't really eat bad all the time...but I had gained so much weight for various reasons...heart problems and pregnancy...that even when I eat well it's not making a difference. I think if I can be better with my food choices AND exercise regularly, maybe it'll work this time.

Thanksgiving

Yes...it's that time again...for giving thanks. I won't get mushy and say all of the things in my heart. But I am truly blessed. I have a loving, wonderful and supportive group of family and friends and I try to thank God everyday for blessing me.

Things don't always seem to be true blessings but I really believe that things happens for a reason. God didn't promise it would be easy. Hubby is working in a war zone...key words ~ he's working. My writing hasn't exploded and editors aren't burning up the phone lines or mail routes with contracts ~ but they're not filing protective orders against me nor have they said "You suck. Go away!" So it's still a workable dream.

I won't have a huge celebration this year...but my family is healthy, happy and safe. Most of them anyways. But as much as I miss having my chaotic household full with dysfunction...I'm kinda looking forward to a quiet, laid-back day for once. The huge family dinners are well worth it when everyone's gone and the house is finally clean, but now I can sit back and relax.

And appreciate what I'm missing. God Bless you and yours. Have a happy, safe holiday!
